The Department of the Rent Commissioner was established in 1971 and comes under the authority of the Minister for Energy Telecommunications & E-Commerce. The Department is the Island’s residential tenant protection agency and is charged with the responsibility for administering the Rent Increases (Domestic Premises) Control Act 1978, which is designed to provide tenants with security of tenure and to regulate increases in rent.
Since its inception, the Department has served as a source of information, counseling, direct intervention and referral for landlords, tenants and the general public who may have concerns and issues relevant to the rent control laws.
